The identities of three lucky Mega Millions ticket holders in Maryland, Illinois and Kansas who will share a $656 million prize, the largest lottery jackpot in U.S. history, are still a mystery today.

The three tickets matched all five numbers including the megaball number from Friday night’s drawing.

The winning numbers were: 2, 4, 23, 38, 46, and megaball 23.

The initial total jackpot estimate was $640 million but was revised to $656 million Saturday.

Before taxes, lottery officials said each winning jackpot ticket was expected to be worth more than $213 million.

The identities of the Maryland and Kansas winners may stay a mystery as the winners can choose to remain anonymous. Illinois identifies lottery winners.

The Maryland winning ticket was sold in Baltimore County and purchased at a 7-11 store in Milford, Md.

Maryland Lottery Director Stephen Martino said it was a quick pick ticket.

“We obviously don’t have any idea right now who the player is, when they will come forward our advice to the player is to safeguard the ticket, sign the back of it,” Martino said.

The Kansas ticket was sold in northeast part of the state. Kansas officials said that the winning retail store will also receive a $10,000 prize.

The winning ticket in Illinois was sold in the small town of Red Bud, which has a population of 3,640. The lucky numbers were the result of a quick pick, according to the Associated Press.

Denise Metzger, manager of the MotoMart convenience store that sold the ticket said that company will get a bonus check of $500,000 according to state lottery rules.

“I just wish someone from Red Bud would win, I never in my wildest dreams thought it would ever happen,” Metzger said.

What is your ticket’s number? Who won yesterday’s draw? $640 Million Dollars!!!

Maryland lottery officials announced early Saturday that their state sold what could become the world’s largest lottery payout of all-time, but it wasn’t immediately clear if that ticket holder would get sole possession of the $640 million jackpot or have to split it with other winners.

Carole Everett, director of communications for the Maryland Lottery, said the winning Mega Millions ticket was purchased at a retailer in Baltimore County. She said it’s too early to know any other information about the lucky ticket holder or whether others were sold elsewhere in the nation.

The winning numbers were 02-04-23-38-46, and the Mega Ball 23.

National lottery officials were expecting to list early Saturday on their website how many winning tickets were sold and from what states, but Maryland sent out its news release and called media organizations hours before the scheduled announcement. The headline of its news release said the winning sale was “one of several nationwide,” but Everett told The Associated Press she couldn’t immediately confirm any others.

Everett said the last time a ticket from the state won a major national jackpot was 2008 when a ticket sold for $24 million.

“We’re thrilled,” she said. “We’re due and excited.”

The estimated jackpot dwarfs the previous $390 million record, which was split in 2007 by two winners who bought tickets in Georgia and New Jersey.

Americans spent nearly $1.5 billion for a chance to hit the jackpot, which amounts to a $462 million lump sum and around $347 million after federal tax withholding. With the jackpot odds at 1 in 176 million, it would cost $176 million to buy up every combination. Under that scenario, the strategy would win $171 million less if your state also withholds taxes.

From coast to coast, people stood in line at retail stores Friday for one last chance at striking it rich.

Maribeth Ptak, 31, of Milwaukee, only buys Mega Millions when the jackpot is really big and she bought one on Friday at a Milwaukee grocery store. She said she’d use the money to pay off bills, including school loans, and then she’d donate a good portion to charity.

“I know the odds are really not in my favor, but why not,” she said.

Sawnya Castro, 31, of Dallas, bought $50 worth of tickets at a 7-Eleven. She figured she’d use the money to create a rescue society for Great Danes, fix up her grandmother’s house, and perhaps even buy a bigger one for herself.

“Not too big — I don’t want that. Too much house to keep with,” she said.

Willie Richards, who works for the U.S. Marshals Service at a federal courthouse in Atlanta, figured if there ever was a time to confront astronomical odds, it was when $640 million was at stake. He bought five tickets.

“When it gets as big as it is now, you’d be nuts not to play,” he said. “You have to take a chance on Lady Luck.”

How does one person win the lottery again and again? Richard Lustig says he knows.

In “Learn How to Increase Your Chances of Winning the Lottery,” Lustig — who has won the grand prize seven times — shares the strategy he calls “the winning lottery method.”

It’s a formula that he says has earned him more than $1 million.

“[Playing the lotto is] like any investment. You have to invest money to get something out of it,” says Lustig, 59, a former singer and drummer from Florida.

“Most people buy a $1 ticket and win $10 and they put the $10 in their pocket,” says Lustig. Those people are playing the game wrong. Instead, he says, if you win $10, then you should buy $11 worth of tickets because “if you lose, you only lost a $1.”

The process earned him $98,000 after he played the Fantasy 5 game in Florida. “I use lottery money all the time to buy more tickets,” says Lustig.

It’s also the method that won him his biggest prize, more than $842,000 in 2002. The first prize he took home was in 1992, for $10,000. With hospital bills coming in from the birth of his son, the winnings couldn’t have come at a better time.

Before then, Lustig says he spent most of the time losing before deciding there had to be a way to improve your chances. For him, playing the lottery is similar to a full job. It’s a daily process that involves dedicating hours to the game.

“I don’t guarantee or make promises to anybody that by following my method you’re going to win the lottery,” says Lustig. “I’m not a scam artist. I’m telling people exactly the truth — that they will definitely increase their chances of winning” using his lottery method.

After developing the method over the years and selling thousands of copies of his report, Lustig decided to write a 40-page book explaining his formula. The game of chance, or what some call luck, is what Lustig addresses in his book currently ranked #3 on Amazon’s self-help book list.

A self-described “gambler,” Lustig loves playing blackjack in Las Vegas. “If you play the game properly you have a better than normal chance of winning most of the time,” Lustig said on the season finale of TLC’s “The Lottery Changed My Life,” which airs on Thursday at 9 p.m. ET.

Unlike some lottery winners who have been through tragedy and misfortune after hitting it big, Lustig says there has been no downside to his winning streak. “I’m very fortunate to have a great family,” says Lustig. In his close-knit family, family members do not have to ask for money, Lustig happily divvies it out.

His gifts to himself include a $25,000 Harley Davidson, an $80,000 Jaguar and a $350,000 house with a custom-designed library.

The talent booker also invests a portion of his earnings. “With the economy, I would have been better off stuffing that money into a mattress,” says Lustig. “I’m a savvy person when it comes to money. I spread my investments out.”

While he says there’s no way to keep track of the amount of tickets he buys each year, Lustig averages 3 to 6 visits a year to the Florida lottery office. He’s become a familiar face at the office where winners go to cash in.

Advice for fellow lottery players: “Don’t throw your tickets away. If you win enough money you can write off the cost of your losing tickets against the taxes you pay on your winnings,” Lustig said on TLC. He also advises winners to be careful because all taxes are not necessarily taken out when winnings are paid out.

“If you’re going to play lottery games try to use some common sense,” says Lustig. “It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to understand the more you play the better chances you have a winning.”

His best advice: “Don’t spend more than you can afford.”

With a half-billion-dollar multistate lottery jackpot up for grabs, plenty of folks are fantasizing about how to spend the money. But doing it the right way — protecting your riches, your identity and your sanity — takes some thought and planning.

Making sure you don’t blow the nation’s largest-ever lottery jackpot within a few years means some advice is in order before the Mega Millions drawing Friday, especially if you’re really, really, really lucky.

Q: What do I do with the ticket?

A: Before anything else, sign the back of the ticket. That will stop anyone else from claiming your riches if you happen to drop it while you’re jumping up and down. Then make a photocopy and lock it in a safe. At the very least, keep it where you know it’s protected. A Rhode Island woman who won a $336 million Powerball jackpot in February hid the ticket in her Bible before going out to breakfast.

Q: What next?

A: Relax; breathe; take time to think about your next move. Don’t do anything you’ll regret for the next 30 years, like calling your best friend or every one of your aunts, uncles and cousins. It doesn’t take long to be overwhelmed by long-lost friends, charities and churches wanting to share your good fortune. You’ve waited a lifetime to hit the jackpot; you can wait a few days before going on a spending spree.

Q: So whom should I tell first?

A: Contacting a lawyer and a financial planner would be a lot wiser than updating your Facebook status. Make sure it’s someone you can trust and, it’s hoped, dealt with before. If you don’t have anyone in mind, ask a close family member or friend. Oklahoma City attorney Richard Craig, whose firm has represented a handful of lottery winners, says it’s essential to assemble a team of financial managers, tax experts, accountants and bankers.

Q: Remind me, how much did I win?

A: As it stands now, the Mega Millions will pay out a lump sum of $359 million before taxes. The annual payments over 26 years will amount to just over $19 million before taxes.

Q: How much will I pay in taxes?

A: This partly depends on where you live. Federal tax is 25 percent; then there’s your state income tax. In Ohio, for example, that’s another 6 percent. And you might need to pay a city tax depending on the local tax rules. So count on about a third of your winnings going to the government.

Q: Should I take the cash payout or annual payments?

A: This is the big question, and most people think taking the lump sum is the smart move. That’s not always the case. First, spreading the payments out protects you from becoming the latest lottery winner who’s lost all their money. Don McNay, author of the book “Son of a Son of a Gambler: Winners, Losers and What to Do When You Win the Lottery,” says nine out of 10 winners go through their money in five years or less. “It’s too much, too fast,” he says. “Nobody is around them putting the brakes on the situation.”

Q: But what if I’m good at managing the money?

A: Invested properly, the lump sum option can be a good choice. There’s more planning that you can use to reduce estate taxes and other financial incentives. Others, though, say that with annual payments, you are taxed on the money only as it comes in, so that will put you in a lower tax bracket rather than taking a big hit on getting a lump sum. And you still can shelter the money in tax-free investments and take advantage of tax law changes over the years.

Q: Should I try to shield my identity?

A: Absolutely. This will protect you from people who want you to invest in their business scheme or those who need cash in an emergency. Lottery winners are besieged by dozens of people and charities looking for help. “There are people who do that for a living. Unless you understand that, you can become a victim very quickly,” says Steve Thornton, an attorney in Bowling Green, Ky., who has represented two jackpot winners.

Q: So how can I protect myself?

A: Again, it somewhat depends on where you live. In Ohio, you can form a trust to manage the money and keep your winnings a secret. In other states, you can form a trust but still be discovered through public records. And a few states require you to show up and receive your oversized check in front of a bunch of cameras, making it impossible to stay anonymous. Thornton set up a corporation in the late 1990s to protect the identity of a client in Kentucky who won $11 million. “No one had done this before, and there were legal questions about whether a corporation can win,” he says. “We were able to hide their names.”

Q: Is it OK to splurge a little?

A: Sure, it’s why you bought a ticket, right? “Get it out of your system, but don’t go overboard,” McNay says. But remember that if there’s a new Mercedes-Benz in the driveway, your neighbors will probably be able to figure out who won the jackpot.

Q: How much should I help my family and others?

A: It’s certainly a natural desire to help relatives in need and take care of future generations. But use extreme caution when giving out your money. Jack Whittaker, a West Virginia contractor who won a nearly $315 million Powerball jackpot in 2002, quickly fell victim to scandals, lawsuits and personal setbacks. His foundation spent $23 million building two churches, and he’s been involved in hundreds of legal actions. “If you win, just don’t give any money away, because the more money you give away, the more they want you to give. And once you start giving it away, everybody will label you an easy touch and be right there after you. And that includes everybody,” Whittaker said five years ago.

The winning numbers for Tuesday’s $356 million Mega Millions lottery jackpot, the third-largest prize in the game’s history, were 9, 19, 34, 44, 51 and Mega Ball 24.

Mega Millions drawings are held Tuesday and Friday at 11 p.m. EDT and tonight’s drawing took place in Atlanta, Ga.

The largest Mega Millions jackpot ever won was $390 million in March 2007, according to Mega Millions.

The winner is selected through five balls drawn from a set of balls numbered one through 56, and one ball is drawn from a set numbered one through 46.

While there are nine ways to win a prize, starting from $2, ticket buyers across the country have their eyes on the $356 million jackpot, which has been growing since Jan. 24. That’s when Mega Millions had its most recent jackpot winner, Marcia Adams, 33, from Georgia. She won $72 million and chose the cash option of $52 million.

The estimated jackpot is based on national sales up to the time of the drawing. In the last drawing, in which there was no jackpot winner, almost 2.9 million tickets won Mega Millions prizes.

The odds of winning the jackpot are approximately one in 176 million, according to the Mega Millions website. The odds of winning any of the Mega Millions prizes are approximately 1 in 40.

The Mega Millions jackpot survived another drawing and is now at a record $500 million. If you, like millions of Americans, are planning on trying your luck, there are a few numbers to keep in mind.

The first and arguably most important data point — to keep your expectations, and perhaps delusions, in check — is the odds. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot ahead of the last drawing were estimated at about 1 in 176 million, according to lottery officials. And the odds of winning any Mega Millions prizes were about 1 in 40, perhaps a bit closer to your NCAA pool.

Luck, By the Numbers

Also interesting are the historically lucky and unlucky numbers. Bespoke Investment Group identified the Mega Millions numbers that have come up the most and least often in the 705 drawings leading up to last night. To win the jackpot, you’ve got to correctly guess all five regular numbers, which are drawn out of a set of balls numbered 1 through 56, and the Mega Ball, drawn from a set of balls numbered 1 through 46.

Historical trends and past performance are not reliable indicators of the future – that’s something investors and gamblers know very well. Nonetheless, we love to glean what we can from any and all data available so that even bad decisions – if that’s what they turn out to be — feel informed.

According to Bespoke’s analysis, there are 8 numbers that have come up as ball 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 in 10% or more of the drawings — #48, 36, 53, 12, 27, 31, 51 and 52. The numbers that came up least often were 41, 49, 47, 37, and 34.

Mega Ball

The numbers that came up most often for the Mega Ball: 36, 9, 7, 35, and 2, with the #36 popping up 3.55% of the time. And the least: 28, 32, 46, 14 and 1, with #28 making the sparsest showing of just six drawings of the 705.

The problem, as Bespoke points out, is how to use that information: “Do you go with the numbers that show up the most often because they’re hot, or do you go with the numbers that show up the least often because they’re well overdue?”

As unsatisfying as it might be, the answer is neither; the utility of the data is limited to entertaining our curiosity. “I think we’d need to see similar results over thousands and thousands of drawings instead of just 705 before we could conclude that there is something other than coincidence behind the numbers that are being drawn more or less frequently,” says Bespoke’s Justin Walter. “Using the analysis to pick numbers wouldn’t help at all really because the odds of winning are still extremely low regardless,” he says.

A lucky lotto player from Stuttgart has become the third-biggest winner in German history by snaring a €24.8-million jackpot on Saturday.

The state-run Lotto company in Baden-Württemberg announced Monday that the winner, whose identity has not been revealed, was the only contestant to choose all six numbers correctly as well as getting the extra “super number.”

The winning numbers were 1, 16, 25, 29, 33 and 47, while the super number was 5. The winner has 13 weeks to lodge their claim for the prize money.

Two lotto players, one from Baden-Württemberg and the other from the Rhineland-Palatinate, won €1.44 million each for picking the correct six, though without the super number.
